PHP Developer's Cookbook
reviewed by
Manuel Lemos
Manuel Lemos manuellemos.net There have been released many good PHP books. Most of them follow the pattern of presenting the theory with simple examples. Some even have whole chapters on developing common types of applications. However, many programmers learn faster about how to take advantage of a language when they are presented with solutions on how to solve their everyday problems. In "PHP Developer's Cookbook, Sterling Hughes along with Andrei Zmievski, two of most active PHP core developers, have taken this approach to write a book that can be a great value to many PHP users, either being very experienced or not. The book is divided in many small chapters that address all of the most important areas of application of PHP, presenting small programming problems and the proposed solutions. The covered areas are: strings, numbers, dates, arrays, regular expressions, files, directories, functions, classes, sessions, HTML, databases, networking, Windows COM, Java, E-mail, LDAP, SNMP, imaging, XML and even how to create new PHP extensions with Zend API. If you are learning PHP and are impatient, this may be already your first PHP book because it also provides some introduction to each theory aspect. If you are already experience this may still be a precious book for consultation because it presents solutions for many problems that you probably have an idea how to solve but solutions in the book may be more efficient in the way they take advantage of probaly less known PHP capabilities. Overall, this would be certainly be a great to book to have near you everyday when you are developing your PHP programs. {buttons}If you are learning PHP and are impatient, this may be already your first PHP book because it also provides some introduction to each theory aspect.
