PHP Functions Essential Reference
reviewed by

Manuel Lemos manuellemos.net Despite PHP is a language with a vast command set with many extensions, it is also one of the best documented Open Sources I have ever seen. The documentation available online at PHP.net does not leave many parts uncovered. Still there is room for improvement in the PHP documentation. This is the point where the book 'PHP Functions Essential Reference' takes off. This book is basically a reference manual but you can learn more from it than from the PHP manual. At least two points make it worth buying: good examples and good introductions to the purpose of PHP extensions. Usually documentation is meant to explain the usage of PHP functions. People willing to learn what which function or extension is good for, hardly will learn that in the PHP reference manual. This book covers well that aspect by presenting good introductions to many of the most important PHP extensions. Another important aspect of this book is that every function described in this book has at least one good working example that shows more than just its usage, but also what it is useful for. Since PHP functions and extensions never stop growing, it would be impossible to cover it all in this book. Many of the main extensions and important functions are covered and more are covered in the site of the book, but this does not diminish the interest of the book. {buttons}For those that are looking for good PHP documentation that explains more about the purpose than just the usage of PHP functions and extensions as it is available in the official PHP manual, this book can certainly be a good acquisition.
